Steam Logging
Ride deep into mountain country to watch steam logging operations. Witness tiny but might geared engines dwarfed by the giant loads they moved.
FEATURING THE RELEASE “GEARED STEAM LOCOS”:
With their ability to negotiate less than perfect tracks and climb steep grades, geared steam locomotives were generally used where tight curves restricted the use of conventional rigid frame steam locos and engine speed was not a factor.
Steaming Through the Deep South
Steaming Through the Deep South
Travel through the south with never before seen footage from the early '60s. Discover some of the last working steam operating in the United States! Rail photographer Mac Owen captured seven operations including the Reader Railroad when it was still a steam powered common carrier.
More info below
Owen discovered some unusual steam engines featured in this film: a wood-burning 2-6-2; a “fireless cooker” at the North American Rayon Company; and an old Southern Pacific engine working for a gravel company. On the affectionately-named “Tweetsie” railroad in Tennessee, the ex-Southern RR number #630 was hard at work moving freight. This engine still steams in excursion service today! Ingenuity and grit kept these steam locomotives working long after main line steam retired. Color, 46 minutes.
