Mallets & Texans By the Sea: On the Teresa Cristina in Brazil
Rare footage shows huge Texan-type 2-10-4s and 2-6-6-2 mallets built in the United States by Baldwin and Alco.
In this remote corner of SE Brazil, these magnificent locomotives hauled coal from the interior mines to the docks at ocean side. The Texans are probably the largest and most powerful meter gauge locomotives ever built. Seeing these engines on the isolated Teresa Cristina railroad is like entering a time capsule and being whisked back 70 years to a bygone railroad age when diesels were unknown and steam was king.
The whole operation is expertly filmed by Dave Corbitt.
Color, 41 minutes.
