Southern Pacific Steam ANTHOLOGY
Southern Pacific Steam ANTHOLOGY
Celebrated rail photographer John Kirkland set out to film every type of steam locomotive that the Southern Pacific operated in the mid 20th century. This anthology is the culmination of Kirkland’s life work documenting the Southern Pacific empire, the railroad that shaped California and much of the West.

Every type of engine on SP tracks is represented, from monster articulateds and cab-forwards pounding drag freight up mountain grades to tiny switchers bustling about the Bayshore yards. Steam engines power over the deserts of New Mexico to the forests of Oregon. Northerns scream by, pulling bright orange “Daylights” across the floor of California’s Central Valley. Passenger traffic hustles in and out of San Francisco’s busy downtown terminal. A vintage diamond-stacked locomotive makes an appearance, restored and in action.
This 2016 release updates and replaces Sunday River’s “Southern Pacific Steam 1890-1960” with new organization and narration, and improved picture quality and sound. Cover photo courtesy of John B. West.
